The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered – Bethesda Returning To Their Roots

The critically acclaimed game which launched on PC and Xbox 360 in 2005 has recently gotten a remaster on Unreal Engine 5. The game launch has been extremely successful on every single console that it released on, which are PS5, PC and Xbox Series S and X. The remaster wasn’t made directly by Bethesda who are the original developers but a team called Virtuos based out of Singapore with offices all over the world.

This game continues the streak of amazing RPGs that have come out this year, including Monster Hunter Wilds and Expedition 33 and we hope that this continues. RPGs have historically done really well in the awards season and the quality of the remaster is simply mind-blowing, reliving this sprawling world from 2005 which has been updated for modern audiences.

What's New In Oblivion Remastered?

Virtuos addressed one of the largest hiccups in the original release which was the levelling system. In the original game the only way to level up was by leveling the skills you picked as your major ones during character creation during the end of the tutorial. Now all skills contribute to levelling up, which makes the experience much smoother.

Now obviously the most noticeable change is the difference in graphics, comparing the old character models to the new ones is like night and day. While some people might argue that it takes away from the charm of the original game, the marquee improvement in graphics and locales can’t be understated.

There were plenty more changes but the most useful and arguably funniest change was the addition of a sprint button. It’s great because previously you could only walk or jump in the game, but the sprint means that you don’t need to worry about getting a horse as soon as you start the game. However the running animation in third person looks unintentionally hilarious, which has spawned hundreds of memes.

Surprise Release… That Ended Up Being Spoiled!

Bethesda intended to release the game as a shadow-drop which means that they were going to announce it and release it the same day. However industry insiders got an early scoop and the release of the game was spoiled weeks in advance of it coming out which ruined the surprise. It is still great that the Oblivion Remaster got launched the same day that the announcement stream happened but it would’ve been even more crazy if the internet wasn’t spoiled ahead of time.

We think that it’s pretty hard to keep these things secret, because there are many people who work in the industry and getting the scoop is paramount to getting clicks. However it means that special releases like this are ruined, there might be a conspiracy here where Bethesda leaked the information early themselves to build up the hype but who really knows the truth.

All Your Old Favourite Quests - In A Fresh New Coat Of Paint

The best part about the Oblivion Remaster is that they kept pretty much everything that relates to quests unchanged. There are some minor changes and quality of life changes here and there but the guilds are all as you remember them. Whether it’s the famous Dark Brotherhood quest line with the immaculate “Whodunit?” quest for the showdown with Mannimarco in the Mages’ Guild, they are all there waiting for you.

If you are new to the game you will find a lot to love in this remaster and you will more than likely find some of the storylines mind-blowing especially considering you haven’t played them. We would recommend not following the main storyline unless you really want a horse early on and fast travelling to the different cities and finding quests to do to immerse yourself in the world.

Does Oblivion Remastered Come With Bugs?

As expected however of any Bethesda products it will be filled with some bugs, some less game-breaking than others. But they need to always have at least a little bit of that Bethesda quality control. One of the bugs that we ran into was that rooms with poison traps would trigger as you entered the room from anywhere and fill the entire chamber with poison gas. This made some quests almost impossible to complete as NPCs or you will die.

There are also some quests in the late game particularly in the two DLCs added for free with the base game (Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles) where the NPCs will not progress their dialogue or skip through the entirety of it. This can be frustrating as the quest will still continue but you might not know what you have to do if you are a new player. You can find more bugs by looking things up online if you get stuck and we implore you to look for workarounds.

Are Downloadable Content And Expansions Free?

In the current gaming climate where Nintendo are planning to charge $79.99 for games on the Nintendo Switch 2, Bethesda launched the remaster with ALL downloadable content that came out for the base game, alongside all the expansions. They could have easily charged $10 a piece for it, including the infamous horse armour which truly started the DLC craze of modern times. But they decided not to, and we have to applaud them for it.

There were plenty of controversies with Fallout 4 and “The Creator Club” which was a way for modders to create content which then Bethesda would charge for. This was seen as a massive over-step as mods have historically always been free for Bethesda games, with one of the largest sites being Nexus Mods. So to see them take their hands away from the money machine has left us with hope for the future.

Should You Buy Oblivion Remastered?

If you are looking for a heavy hit of nostalgia and to relieve your glory days of spending time in Tamriel then why not. The game is affordably priced in the UK at £49.99 and in the US for $49.99 similarly to Clair Obscur Expedition 33 which released in the same time window. You can buy the deluxe edition which comes with some goodies like… horse armour, and some other armour sets which can be used on your character.

Should you be a new player, there is absolutely no reason to skip out on one of the best single player RPGs of all time. You should experience Oblivion alongside the returning players to see what people have praised for over 20 years at this point. Because it’s available on all ninth generation consoles with the exception of the Switch there’s no better time to get into Oblivion.
